As the leaders of China and the US prepare to meet, the strategic rivalry between the two nations over artificial intelligence continues to intensify. Constrained by US advanced chip export controls, Chinese firms are mirroring their past playbook in the electric vehicle sector by championing open-weight models and driving down costs, rapidly amassing billions of global downloads and challenging the dominance of proprietary Western models.
However, open-weight models suffer from extreme interchangeability and lack the proprietary lock-in of operating systems or hardware ecosystems, creating a severe gap between global popularity and actual monetization. Currently, this wave of freely available models primarily fuels commercial demand for high-bandwidth Apple hardware and Nvidia chips, while also drawing intense US scrutiny over alleged intellectual property distillation.
From a long-term geopolitical standpoint, Beijing aims to cultivate influence across emerging markets and resist technological decoupling by positioning itself as a champion of open-source AI cooperation. Yet, while China's strategy seeks to commoditize intelligence to benefit its broader domestic ecosystem, translating this open-model reach into durable economic and geopolitical value remains a formidable challenge until its domestic hardware bottleneck is resolved.
