An E-3 AWACS was destroyed in Saudi Arabia on March 27, with analysis suggesting a precise taxiway-targeting strike, and around 16 such aircraft exist in the U.S. inventory. Multiple KC-135 tankers reportedly sustained damage, one tanker was hurt in a mid-air incident while another crashed killing six crew, Kuwait accidentally shot down three F-15s, and Iran claims both damage to an F-35 that emergency-landed in Jordan and several MQ-9 Reaper losses.
Open-source loss accounting remains incomplete because the U.S. does not generally confirm all battle losses and some imagery providers have reduced access, but Iranian attacks appear to have destroyed or damaged roughly ten radar systems, including an AN/TPY-2 in Jordan (about 3,000km range) and possibly another, as well as a more capable AN/FPS-132 with 5,000km range tied to THAAD defenses, while the U.S. has only eight such batteries. Replacing these systems could cost hundreds of millions or billions and take years, reinforcing Tim Walton’s warning that there is no sanctuary and that losses could rise much more against peer adversaries such as China.
