On June 9th, an American Apache attack helicopter was shot down by Iran near the Strait of Hormuz, leading to the first-ever drone rescue at sea. An uncrewed surface vessel (USV) successfully recovered the two crew members within two hours of the crash, marking a milestone in robotic casualty evacuation.

This robotic revolution is also expanding on land, where Ukraine's medical battalions used unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) to rescue 21 wounded soldiers in a single day, completing six evacuations within 24 hours in April. However, such military applications were previously restricted, as US Army memos in 2006, 2009, and 2013 had deemed unattended evacuation platforms unacceptable.

While robotic evacuation reduces human risk and counters vulnerable helicopter operations, it poses challenges in remote detection and requires casualties to endure rough transport. Despite these limitations, recent deployments like CENTCOM's 2023 tests with the Martac T-38 drone demonstrate the growing viability of autonomous rescue systems.
