Since the United States reduced its military aid, Europe has filled the breach by increasing financial and military support to Ukraine. This assistance has contributed to significant Russian battlefield losses, prompting some European leaders to consider direct talks with Vladimir Putin.

However, Ukraine's integration into the West remains complex; four years after Ukraine became an EU candidate, the union is opening its first negotiating cluster this month. While Kyiv hopes for full EU membership as early as next year, European enthusiasts estimate it will take at least a decade.

To secure its own borders and leverage Ukraine's advanced defense technology, Europe must accelerate the accession process rather than treat Ukraine as a charity case. Formalizing this security partnership, perhaps via associate membership or a European Security Council, is crucial to prevent young Ukrainians from souring on the union.
