A new movement of Gen-Z socialism is gaining traction by proposing me-first economic policies, such as price controls and wealth taxes, to address concerns about inflation, housing, and AI. Mainstream centrist parties, like the Democrats in America who propose exempting over half of tax filers from federal income tax, are increasingly adopting these populist ideas to compete.
However, critics argue that these policies, including rent controls and high wealth taxes, would destroy incentives to build housing and innovate, ultimately threatening prosperity as seen in Europe's low-growth funk or Argentina's century of decline. Free-market liberals must mount a punchier defense of capitalism, pointing out that global real incomes, life expectancy, and poverty reduction are at historic highs.
To counter this rise, centrist governments must directly solve issues driving discontent by building abundant housing, reducing tax burdens on the young, and reforming inheritance and property taxes. They must also address the disruption of AI through positive prescriptions like distributed capital ownership rather than state-enforced job guarantees or moratoriums.
