On December 18, 2025 (GMT+8) at 2:30 AM, Amazon announced a reorganization of its artificial intelligence teams and the creation of a new unit led by a top AWS leader. CEO Andy Jassy said Peter DeSantis will run the group and report directly to him. The new organization combines the AGI team (overseeing Nova-branded models and the “digital brains” of Alexa), Amazon’s chipmaking efforts, and its quantum computing research.

Several months after ChatGPT arrived in late 2022, Amazon had centralized AI work that had been split between Alexa and AWS into a single organization to pursue cutting-edge, multipurpose capabilities. This move further strengthens that effort by adding Annapurna Labs—acquired in 2015—as a core foundation for general-purpose chips and AI-focused hardware. It also comes as AWS remains the largest seller of rented computing and storage but faces intense AI competition from Microsoft, Google, and startups.

Jassy said the company is at an “inflection point” where new technologies will power a significant share of future customer experiences, and he highlighted DeSantis’s record at the edge of what is technically possible. Current AGI chief Rohit Prasad, a longtime leader of Alexa speech science, will leave at the end of 2025. Pieter Abbeel (who joined after Amazon hired Covariant’s founders in 2024) will lead foundational model teams; a separate report said OpenAI is discussing raising $10 billion from Amazon and using its chips (December 17, 2025).
