Anthropic, founded in 2021 by ex-OpenAI researchers, raised $30bn in a new funding round as it plans a major data-centre expansion and prepares for an initial public offering as early as this year. The round values the Claude maker at a $350bn pre-money valuation, positioning it to keep competing with large AI rivals including Google, Meta, and OpenAI.
Anthropic says it has a $14bn revenue run rate, with about 80 per cent coming from enterprise customers, reflecting its business-focused strategy. It claims more than 500 customers each spend over $1mn per year on its workplace tools, and that business subscriptions to Claude Code have quadrupled since the start of this year; Claude Code launched last year and is described as a primary coding tool for software engineers, supporting task planning and execution against existing company codebases.
The funding includes part of a $15bn Microsoft and Nvidia commitment announced late last year, though Anthropic did not disclose the amount, and the rest of the round was reported to be several times subscribed; during the process, Anthropic raised its funding target by $10bn. Competitive pressure remains intense: OpenAI is said to be discussing a round that could exceed $100bn and has launched a coding agent called Codex, while both companies are competing for researchers and chips; infrastructure spending contrasts sharply, with OpenAI reportedly committing well over $1tn on compute over the next 8 years, while Anthropic says it will use the new capital to power infrastructure expansion and has hired Wilson Sonsini to start IPO preparations.
