According to the National Bureau of Statistics, China's industrial profits rose by 21.1% year-on-year in May, slowing down from a 24.7% jump in April. This marks the first deceleration in growth since November, suggesting that strong exports and price gains failed to fully offset tepid domestic demand.
Although China exited factory deflation in March after over three years and producer prices rose at the fastest pace since 2022, slumping domestic investment and soft household spending continue to weigh heavily on corporate earnings, negating the positive tailwinds from the AI boom and energy market disruptions.
For the first five months of the year, total industrial profits reached 3.14 trillion yuan ($462 billion), which remains below the level recorded in the same period of 2022. Official analysts noted that the imbalance of strong supply and weak demand persists domestically, with companies in several industries still facing difficulties.
