Repair site iFixit has released a new mobile app for iOS and Android that embeds FixBot, a chatbot built from a fusion of roughly a dozen generative AI models and trained on iFixit’s repair corpus. The app offers mobile access to manuals and guides for more than 125,000 devices, and can use the phone’s camera and computer vision to identify broken gear such as flat car tires, dead iPods, or malfunctioning espresso machines.
FixBot is designed to focus on diagnostics and repair guidance rather than general conversation. On the author’s Pixel 9 Pro, the app immediately reported 98 percent battery health, then exposed data on charge cycles, estimated remaining lifespan, and links to step by step battery replacement guides and compatible parts. These diagnostics work seamlessly on Android, while iOS support is more constrained because Apple restricts access to detailed battery APIs.
iFixit serves an average of about 10 million visitors each month seeking help with hundreds of thousands of devices, so the company spent a couple of years building FixBot to surface precise answers from its sprawling library of repair guides. The bot enforces guardrails that keep it on repair topics and away from illegal or deeply personal questions, and its guidance is tuned more toward European style consumer protections than stricter American rules.
