In the four years since chatbots entered the mainstream, young people have become increasingly skeptical of the hype surrounding large language models. Research by YPulse shows that 37 percent of teens cringe at AI-generated content such as music and videos, and over half express concern about misinformation and deepfakes, even as many continue to use the technology for schoolwork and companionship.

Polling data reveals significant contradictions in youth attitudes toward AI. A Pew Research report found that while a majority of American teens use chatbots and some see personal benefits, more than a quarter believe AI will negatively impact society over the next two decades, citing fears of job displacement, the erosion of critical thinking skills, and environmental consequences.

Unlike previous technology waves where moral panic originated with older generations, resistance to AI is coming from young people themselves. Communications professor Melanie Green notes that kids are put off by the aggressive way AI is being pushed on them by adults and tech corporations, and they are acutely aware that their generation will bear the brunt of any disruption. On social media platforms, parents report their children equating "that's AI" with "that's BS," while educators observe that students—even those who use AI—resent the art it produces and worry about its broader consequences.
