On social media, “London simulator” content portrays London as a knife-crime hotbed, and one claim drew over 2.3m views on X, but the data point the other way with violent crime falling for years. Robberies have been steady since 2010 even as the population grew by roughly 1m; 2024 hospital admissions for “assault by sharp object” were the lowest in at least a decade; and London’s homicide rate is 1.1 per 100,000—the lowest since comparable records began—below Paris (1.3) and Berlin (3.2), while similarly sized New York has almost three times as many homicides.
The Economist scraped all X posts from 2020–2025 mentioning “London” plus violent-crime keywords, finding that last year the volume was double the 2020–2024 yearly average and that in 2025 average likes and retweets per post were almost double 2024. Since 2023, the share of “London crime” posts that also mention Islam, migrants, or race has doubled and “Londonistan” posts have doubled since 2020; although bots make up about 20% of London-crime posts, they get little attention, with the most influential posters appearing to be Britain-based humans as X pays contributors for engagement.
A YouGov poll finds 61% of Britons now see London as unsafe, up from 39% in 2014, rising to 85% among Reform voters. Only about a third of Londoners agree and 81% say their local area is safe, highlighting a large gap between measured risk and amplified online perception.
