Chinese airlines sharply expanded cuts to Japan-bound flights for December: 904 of the originally scheduled 5,548 flights have been canceled—16% of total capacity and over triple the 268 cancellations reported just two days earlier—removing roughly 156,000 seats across 72 routes and 13 airports. Kansai International Airport is the hardest hit, losing 626 arrivals (including 80 from Nanjing, 71 from Shanghai, 58 from Beijing). Narita and Chubu each lose 68 flights, New Chitose 61, Naha 26, while Haneda sees minimal impact with only 7 cancellations out of 989 planned arrivals.
Cuts are led by major Chinese carriers: China Southern (118), China Eastern (109), with even larger reductions from Shanghai-based mid-sized airlines Spring Airlines (182) and Juneyao Airlines (166). Airfare has collapsed, with December round-trip Kansai–Shanghai tickets dropping from around ¥20,000 last year to roughly ¥8,500. Narita Airport officials warn that 10%–20% of the nearly 300 weekly flights linking Narita and mainland China may be removed. The reductions follow Beijing’s travel warning amid tensions after PM Sanae Takaichi’s Taiwan remarks, and reports that Chinese authorities instructed airlines to curb Japan flights.
Tourism recovery is at risk. From January to October, 8.2 million Chinese travelers visited Japan—up about 40% year-on-year and a central pillar of inbound growth. Analysts caution that China may deploy further measures, making the outlook for air links and visitor flows highly uncertain.
