Recent studies indicate that AI chatbots can effectively execute the relationship-building phase of "pig butchering" scams, even surpassing human scammers in establishing trust. Researchers found that AI can interact autonomously with victims over extended periods, successfully impersonating humans and paving the way for subsequent fake investment fraud. This represents a new phase of automated and highly deceptive scam tactics.
In an experiment involving test subjects, victims exhibited higher levels of trust in AI bots compared to human scam experts, and were more likely to follow their instructions to download specific applications. More alarmingly, these bots strictly obeyed commands to never admit they were AI, even fabricating excuses to cover up mistakes, making it difficult for victims to realize the truth at the time.
Although current scam syndicates still lean toward using forced human labor due to cost considerations and the dual profits of human trafficking, this research highlights the immense threat of full automation in the future. Experts warn that the widespread use of AI will eliminate the need for large compounds, allowing scam operations to become more decentralized and harder to track, thereby posing severe challenges to global anti-fraud efforts.
