New Zealand and Australia are expected to join the global transition toward next-day (T+1) settlement for stock transactions within five years, according to a senior banking executive. This transition will take place once key clearing and settlement systems in both countries are fully prepared to adapt to global financial market trends.
Assuming the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) meets its target of rolling out its CHESS settlement platform by 2029, Australia could implement T+1 settlement as early as 2030. Given the strong interconnection between the two markets, New Zealand is expected to make the transition simultaneously.
The global shift to shorter settlement cycles is accelerating, with the US, Canada, and Mexico leading the way in 2024, and the UK and Europe committing to the change in October 2027. The uneven pace of this transition is currently creating challenges and pressure for investors from T+2 markets when trading in T+1 environments.
