Japan’s eyewear is drawing overseas visitors in ways that show up in price and turnaround metrics: in 2025 the average price per pair was $141.49 in Japan, cheaper than the US at $178.22 and about 20% less than Italy’s $174.38. Even in yen terms, prices fell amid broader inflation: Japan’s government data put the December 2025 average at 23,303 yen ($147), about 20% lower than five years earlier. Tourists also cite same-day pickup, versus weeks in the US from prescription to finished glasses.
Retailers attribute low prices and fast delivery to cost structure and automation: Zoff starts at 5,500 yen, Jins at 6,600 yen, and Owndays at 7,000 yen; even with anti-reflective coating, scratch resistance, or ultrathin lenses, a complete pair with lenses is around 20,000 yen. Analysts say the “high-quality, low-cost, large-volume” model entered eyewear about 20 years ago; in-store automated lens processing shifted complex work from factories to shops, cutting transport costs; Owndays reduced lens procurement via consolidated bulk orders and since November 2024 has offered bifocals at no extra charge, intensifying price competition.
Demand shifts are visible in customer shares and store expansion: Owndays reported a 10% increase in foreign visitors for 2025, with about 80% of customers at its Osaka Shinsaibashi store and about 50% at its Shinjuku store opened in December coming from overseas; Intermestic, which runs Zoff, reported an 80% increase last year. Zoff’s automated eye-test machines support up to 10 languages (including English and Chinese), and equipment maker Nidek said store installations have surged in the past two to three years. Real-estate research estimates eyewear floor area in prime districts such as Osaka’s Shinsaibashi and Kyoto’s Kawaramachi grew roughly 30% in 2025, and Jins plans a Ginza main-street opening this spring.
