Volunteers from Ghost Diving and Healthy Seas recently captured the first-ever underwater footage of a great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) in its Mediterranean habitat, specifically in the Strait of Sicily. Diver Derk Remmers documented the encounter, which featured a large adult male. This sighting is highly significant because the native Mediterranean great white shark population is classified as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), despite the species being listed globally as vulnerable.
Great white sharks are among the largest predatory fish, capable of exceeding 6 meters (20 feet) in length and weighing over 2 metric tons (2 tons). As apex predators, they play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. However, human activities such as accidental capture in fishing operations, illegal fishing, habitat loss, and the decline of natural prey have drastically reduced their numbers in the Mediterranean, making sightings extremely rare and attacks on humans very uncommon.
According to researcher Carlo Cattano from the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, historically, most knowledge of Mediterranean great white sharks came from dead specimens caught in fishing operations. Consequently, this live observation provides invaluable data on the distribution, habits, and behavior of this critically endangered population. This rare encounter validates the conservation value of the Strait of Sicily and highlights the urgent need to strengthen conservation efforts in fragile marine ecosystems.
