Google said its Gemini assistant can now proactively use selected user data across Gmail, Search, Photos, and YouTube through a beta feature called Personal Intelligence, aiming to make responses more personalized. Josh Woodward, a vice president for the Gemini app, Google Labs, and AI Studio, wrote in a Wednesday blog post that this is a step toward making Gemini more personal, proactive, and powerful. Personal Intelligence initially launches in the US in beta, with the feature turned off by default.
To address privacy, Personal Intelligence is opt-in: users must enable it and can choose which apps connect to Gemini, such as excluding Search history while including email, photos, and YouTube viewing history. Unlike earlier integrations where Gemini retrieved information only when asked, Personal Intelligence can automatically draw on the chosen apps whenever it may improve an answer. Google says personalization will not apply to all responses, and users can regenerate an answer without personalization.
Google acknowledges mistakes will still occur despite extensive beta testing, including over-personalization that links unrelated topics and difficulties with timing or nuance around relationship changes like divorces or shifting interests. Users can give feedback via a thumbs-down button and correct Gemini within the conversation. Rollout begins Jan. 14 for Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the US and is expected to reach all such users over the next week, with expansion planned for other countries and Gemini’s free tier.
