Apple's Live Translation, first introduced with the AirPods Pro 3, allows near-instant translation in the ear. As of this update, it is not limited to latest flagship models: it also works with AirPods 4 with active noise cancellation, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, and only the 2026 generation of AirPods Pro Max. The feature is designed for users needing real-time conversational support, especially for FaceTime calls or travel scenarios.
On the iPhone side, requirements are strict: an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 or iPhone 17 model, running the latest iOS 26 is required, and Apple Intelligence must be enabled under Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri. The setup process also requires downloading both directions of translation beforehand from the headphone language menu, meaning source and target languages must be selected in advance before starting a conversation.
To use it, you can open the Translate app's Live tab and choose Start Conversation, or simultaneously press and hold both AirPods stems; alternatively, use Siri with the command Siri, start live translation, and launch via Control Center shortcut or an Action Button binding. Incoming speech is translated and played in real time through the headphones, while your own speech can appear as text on iPhone or play through iPhone speakers. Apple states all processing is done on-device for privacy, while warning that AI translation may be inaccurate, unexpected, or offensive.
