AI data centers are gigantic in footprint, yet the critical operations happen at microscopic scale: tiny motors drive fans, and thread-like liquid channels flow through copper plates to dissipate heat. Tiny manufacturing deviations can render whole machines silent. Each AI chip generation raises demand for these parts, and server racks that once used only dozens of fiber-optic links now require tens of thousands, creating bottlenecks across systems from memory chips to battery and power-control subsystems.

Fiber optics most clearly reflects the demand gap. AI facilities handle much more data traffic than conventional clouds, so optical fiber has become a central bottleneck. Corning has secured a 6 billion dollar supply agreement with Meta Platforms and a 500 million dollar stock deal with Nvidia. Fujikura Ltd shares are up more than 500% in the past year, while Furukawa Electric Co shares are up over 800%, a signal that the market is rapidly repricing AI-induced supply stress.

At the device level, one Nvidia server may contain 30,000 MLCCs, and a full rack up to 440,000; each MLCC, smaller than a grain of sand, contains hundreds of ceramic-metal layers and is sintered above 1,000°C. Murata Manufacturing controls 45% of the high-end AI-server MLCC market, yet is fielding inquiries at roughly twice its annual capacity and facing 20–30 week lead times. Meanwhile, a rack fan running at 20,000 rpm (about 333 rev/s) depends on two to four ball bearings with outer diameters of 10 mm or less; Minebea Mitsumi produces about 350 million units per month (over 4 billion per year) but still cannot meet demand.
