Haotian is a Chinese-language AI face-swapping tool that can produce “nearly perfect” swaps in live video calls and has made millions selling mainly via Telegram. It plugs into platforms such as WhatsApp and WeChat and says users can tweak up to 50 settings to better mimic an impersonated face. Researchers and WIRED’s analysis say its marketing has increasingly targeted “pig butchering” scammers and fraud operations in Southeast Asia; after WIRED inquired, its main public channel quickly became inaccessible or vanished.
In the last two years, UN Office on Drugs and Crime officials have identified more than 10 face-swapping tools potentially used by cybercriminals in Southeast Asia. Ngo’s research says Haotian’s public Telegram channel launched in October 2023 and now has more than 20,000 subscribers for updates and support. Haotian also claims upgrades that reduce telltale glitches even when a person waves hands in front of their face, and it advertises real-time voice impersonation that can “clone anyone’s voice.” It sells mostly by subscription; an older website listing put a “fully functional” version at $4,980 per year.
Elliptic analyzed four crypto wallets linked to Haotian and found at least $3.9 million received in recent years across 3,558 payments; more than 3,007 payments were over $100, the largest was $14,890, and many transactions cluster around $500. Elliptic says almost half of payments had ties to the US-sanctioned Huione Guarantee scam marketplace; $1.2 million flowed between Haotian and Huione entities, ending on November 7. Researchers also say proceeds from at least 52 known fraud cases reached these wallets, consistent with scammers paying from scam revenue.
