With Israel's elections four months away, polls show Gadi Eisenkot overtaking Naftali Bennett as the primary challenger to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. As a former IDF chief of staff who entered parliament in 2022, Eisenkot joined Netanyahu's war cabinet after October 7th but resigned eight months later. His centrist party is now nearly as popular as Netanyahu's Likud. During the war, Eisenkot criticized the prime minister for avoiding significant decisions, warning that Israel risked an inconclusive conflict and would fail to destroy Hamas's military and governing capabilities.
Over two years later, his warnings have proven correct. The IDF occupies over half of Gaza, while Hamas remains entrenched in the rest, ruling over 2 million residents. Israel's military campaign has destroyed much of Gaza and killed over 73,000 people, mostly civilians, severely damaging Israel's international standing. Eisenkot's warnings carry poignant weight, as his 25-year-old son, Gal, was killed in action two months prior to his resignation. Meanwhile, Netanyahu remains at loggerheads with the administration of the United States.
Politically, Eisenkot is hard to classify, having voted for both the left-wing Labor and right-wing Likud. Militarily, he is considered the author of the controversial Dahiyeh Doctrine, yet as IDF chief in 2015-16, he opposed a shoot-to-kill policy against Palestinian attackers. Although he initially supported the wars in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran, he favored ending them sooner and pursuing diplomatic initiatives. Lacking Netanyahu's oratorical skills, Eisenkot must now convince the public that his forthcoming manifesto offers a viable strategic and domestic alternative.
