RGB LED uses red, green, and blue light directly in the backlight array, replacing the traditional white backlight-and-filter approach and allowing color generation at the illumination stage. Sony, Samsung, LG, and Hisense have all revealed products using this technology, positioning it as one of the most color-accurate mainstream TV formats to date.

On measurable performance, RGB LED TVs have demonstrated 100% coverage of the BT.2020 color space, a threshold previous generations of LED TVs could not reach. In theory, these displays can exceed OLED in overall brightness while avoiding long-standing concerns about OLED brightness limits and burn-in. Although recent OLED generations have mitigated many of those issues, RGB LED differentiates itself through the combined emphasis on extreme brightness and expanded color accuracy, particularly in well-lit rooms.

As first-generation consumer products, RGB LED TVs still face open questions, including potential color bleed between green and blue backlights and residual blooming from non–pixel-level illumination. Fully BT.2020-encoded content remains scarce, but now that most manufacturers have hardware capable of displaying it, content adoption is expected to rise over time.
