In May, US technology companies announced 38,242 job cuts, marking the highest monthly total since August 2024, driven primarily by increased spending on artificial intelligence (AI). So far in 2026, the technology sector has announced a total of 123,653 layoffs, representing a significant increase of more than 65% compared to the same period in 2025. In contrast, total private-sector job cut announcements across other industries experienced a 7% decrease over the past five months compared to the prior year, highlighting a 'low-hire, low-fire' environment.

According to Andy Challenger, chief revenue officer of Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc., technology is actively reshaping the labor market, with AI now cited as the leading reason for workforce reductions. This trend aligns with recent major staff reduction announcements from high-profile companies such as Meta Platforms Inc., Intuit Inc., and Cisco Systems Inc. Despite these extensive layoff announcements, which predominantly target white-collar positions, weekly filings for unemployment insurance have not shown any meaningful increase.

Although tech firms led in job cuts, they also registered the largest hiring plans of any sector. Across all industries, US employers announced 80,472 planned hires so far this year, which is an improvement over 2024 and 2025 levels but remains well below the totals recorded for the same period from 2019 to 2023. Meanwhile, the government's upcoming monthly jobs report is expected to show that US employers added 85,000 jobs in May, representing the strongest three-month stretch of job gains in over a year.
