On November 18, 2023, the US Congress passed a law compelling the government to release files related to Jeffrey Epstein, a measure that has since been signed by the president. The Department of Justice (DoJ) holds the largest trove, spanning two criminal investigations from 2006 to 2019. The first case in 2008 involved sexual abuse of dozens of underage girls in Florida and resulted in a controversial plea deal; the second, in July 2019, led to trafficking charges. The DoJ also has records surrounding Epstein’s apparent suicide in August 2019 while in federal custody.

Federal agents collected significant documents from property seizures and detailed witness interviews. A July 2023 memo from the DoJ revealed they possess around 300 gigabytes of data and physical evidence, including a large volume of images and videos of Epstein's victims, as well as extensive internal communications. However, the files’ narrow focus on criminal cases may disappoint those hoping for new explosive revelations about Epstein’s associates.

Even if the DoJ releases its files, information about the victims will likely be heavily redacted, and the department may withhold documents to protect ongoing investigations. For example, Trump has recently ordered probes into prominent Democrats linked to Epstein. These actions are likely to fuel continued speculation for podcasters and politicians who interpret withheld documents as signs of conspiracy.
