According to Circana, sales of traditional blue exam booklets more than doubled from 2022 to 2024. In 2023, a survey by Intelligent found that 66% of high school and college teachers were changing assignments due to ChatGPT; of those, 76% required or planned to require handwritten work, and 87% required or planned to add an oral presentation. A same-year EdWeek Research Centre survey showed 43% of educators think students should solve math problems in class using pencil and paper to prevent AI usage. Another 2025 survey found 56% of educators considered laptops, tablets, and desktops a major source of distraction.

Some wealthy countries are restricting classroom tech. In 2023, Sweden banned digital tools for young children and emphasized printed textbooks and handwriting, with Denmark and Finland adopting similar policies. Affluent families are more likely to favor less tech in the classroom. According to a December 2024 Pew Research report, 58% of Hispanic and 53% of Black teenagers reported being online almost constantly, compared to 37% of white teenagers, showing the "digital divide" has reversed.

Although classroom technology can boost algebra learning, evidence for improved outcomes in other subjects is thin. By contrast, handwriting’s cognitive benefits are gaining new respect. While many teachers want to return to in-person, pen-and-paper exams, large public universities are not providing sufficient resources. Educators and parents are rethinking the use of classroom time, with more teachers dedicating full periods to quiet, handwritten work in an effort to reduce digital distractions.
