Nvidia has recently established a new corporate "white list" and implemented stricter compliance checks to prevent its advanced AI chips from reaching China. This move has resulted in a more than 50 percent reduction in its authorized Asian customers across countries like Singapore, Malaysia, and Japan. It reflects a broader US effort to close loopholes that allow advanced chips to enter China via third countries.
Under pressure from Washington, Nvidia has significantly escalated its compliance processes, which now involve staff visiting customer data centers, verifying contracts, and interviewing end-users to confirm business authenticity. Additionally, US prosecutors indicted Supermicro personnel in March for allegedly smuggling $2.5 billion worth of chips to China using a Southeast Asian pass-through entity, highlighting the severe issue of black markets facilitated by third-party brokers.
This recent crackdown has exacerbated the shortage of AI chips in China. Although China is trying to expand its domestic production capacity, output remains far below global competitors due to a lack of advanced manufacturing equipment. As technology companies increase their use of computationally intensive AI agents, domestic supply cannot meet the surging demand, resulting in all available domestic AI chips being sold out regardless of their grade.
