An unprecedented transfer of wealth in the coming decades is expected to disproportionately benefit the wealthiest families in the United States. According to a Visa report, nearly three-quarters of those poised to inherit from Baby Boomers already rank in the top ten percent of household net worth.
Rather than facilitating a broad redistribution of wealth, this generational transfer will reinforce existing pockets of affluence. High-income households are more likely to direct their inherited funds toward savings, investments, and real estate, thereby creating new business opportunities for banks and wealth management firms.
Although the total value of this historic wealth transfer is estimated at 93 trillion dollars, only about 36 trillion dollars will ultimately be passed down after accounting for taxes, fees, and retirement spending. Millennials and Generation Z are projected to spend approximately 8 trillion dollars of this inheritance on sectors such as housing, travel, and retail.
