Since the 13th century, legal training has relied on an apprenticeship model of learning by doing, but as AI automates foundational tasks like document review, law firms must rethink how they develop talent. Over the past few decades, as firms expanded globally, legal training evolved from informal mentoring into structured programs managed by dedicated teams covering areas like business development and leadership, with the rise of AI now driving a further transformation.

Despite the disruptive changes brought by AI, traditional legal training methods and core skills remain crucially important. Senior lawyers point out that while AI can process massive volumes of documents, the attention to detail young lawyers previously developed through routine tasks is now essential for verifying and assessing the quality of AI-generated output, and the core role of lawyers in providing judgment and creating value has not changed.

To embrace the new era, many firms are not eliminating junior lawyers but rather believe these AI-native recruits are best equipped to adapt to this transformation. Firms are beginning to use AI-powered simulation tools for negotiation and deposition training combined with direct guidance from senior partners, thereby cultivating a healthy skepticism toward technology and machine-irreplaceable human skills like empathy, ultimately reinventing the modern legal apprenticeship.
