Since the United States and Israel began attacking Iran on February 28, 2026, misinformation about the Iran war has expanded rapidly on X, while Grok has also failed conspicuously as a verification tool. When Tal Hagin asked it to verify a video said to show Iranian missiles striking Tel Aviv, Grok repeatedly misidentified the location and date and even used an AI-generated image as evidence. This shows that false content on the platform has moved beyond earlier recycled footage toward a larger wave of AI images and videos.
The numbers indicate very large reach for AI propaganda. On March 2, Iranian officials and state media circulated an AI video showing a high-rise in Bahrain on fire; another image claiming that a US B-2 bomber had been shot down by Iran and that US troops were detained drew more than 1 million views before deletion, while images of captured Delta Force members exceeded 5 million views before deletion. A fabricated video of Iran making missiles deep inside a cave also passed 1 million views, and a fake video involving Donald Trump and a line of girls reached more than 6.8 million views before removal.
Non-AI disinformation has continued to spread as well, especially around the February 28 attack on a primary school in Minab, Iran, where more than 168 people were killed, including 110 children. Pro-Trump accounts reused unrelated footage to claim that an Iranian government missile struck the school, but video verified by The New York Times showed a Tomahawk cruise missile hitting a nearby naval base, and the United States is the only side in this conflict that uses Tomahawks. The broader trend is that platform labeling, AI detection, and enforcement speed are all failing to keep pace with the rising scale and realism of misinformation during crisis.
