US employers are dramatically intensifying identity verification throughout the hiring process in response to a surge in application fraud. Companies now deploy biometric facial scans, scrutinize email histories, and even ask interviewees to show electrical outlets on camera to confirm their location. Over a third of recruiters spend half their workweek filtering AI-generated spam applications, according to Greenhouse. Gartner reports that candidates have used deepfakes to impersonate others in video interviews, and estimates that by 2028, one in four job applications will be fraudulent.
The financial toll of hiring fraud is substantial. A Checkr survey found that 23% of US companies lost more than $50,000 to hiring fraud in the past year, with 10% exceeding $100,000 in losses due to project delays, compliance failures, and rehiring costs. The threat extends to national security: the Justice Department revealed that North Korean operatives infiltrated over 100 US companies by posing as American remote IT workers using fabricated identities, with NBCUniversal, Nike, and Boeing among the affected firms. An Equifax survey found that nearly three-quarters of HR officials are encountering challenges with fabricated or misleading candidate information.
The identity-verification industry is booming as a result. CLEAR, known for its airport expedited-screening membership, has expanded its biometric platform to help employers vet applicants using photo IDs and facial scans. Persona, another verification firm, detects suspicious signals such as newly created email addresses, mismatched time zones, VPN usage, and rapidly shifting IP addresses—in one case catching an applicant impersonating a Coinbase employee using details from a verified LinkedIn profile. More than 40% of employers hiring temporary workers now use identity-verification software, and some companies require biometric validation or government-issued ID presentation before interviews even begin, marking a fundamental shift from traditional background checks focused on the past to real-time identity confirmation.
