Walt Disney Co. is licensing more than 200 iconic animated characters to OpenAI under a new three-year agreement, taking a $1 billion equity stake with an option to buy more. OpenAI’s Sora can use these characters in AI-generated videos, but no actor likenesses or voices are included. Disney will also become a major OpenAI customer, using Sora clips on Disney Plus and deploying ChatGPT tools for employees.
The deal, billed as the largest equity investment yet by a major Hollywood studio in an AI model developer, comes as Disney navigates a mixed landscape of collaboration and litigation. Disney previously took a $1.5 billion stake in Epic Games to bring its characters into Fortnite and other titles, even as it sued Midjourney for copyright infringement and sent a cease-and-desist letter to Google. Similar tensions appear across media, with major record labels suing two audio AI startups before recently settling with Udio.
OpenAI, which has raised tens of billions of dollars for talent, chips, and data centers and was valued at $500 billion in a recent secondary share sale, has spent months courting Disney, Comcast, and Warner Bros. Discovery about Sora’s creative potential. The latest Sora app, launched in September as an invitation-only social platform after an initial release last December, lets users generate and share short video clips and insert realistic AI avatars. Sora and ChatGPT Images are expected to start generating videos featuring Disney characters in early 2026.
