Until recently, 33-year-old Michal Strnad, chief executive and majority owner of Czechoslovak Group (CSG), stayed largely out of the spotlight, but the group’s January IPO at about €25bn changed that profile. The company now employs 14,000 people across more than 30 production sites, posted €6.7bn in revenue last year—12 times its 2021 level—with four-fifths defence-related, putting it among Europe’s top-ten arms-makers and its second-largest ammunition producer after Rheinmetall.
Growth has been driven by the Ukraine war and demand channels: under the Czech Ammunition Initiative, Ukraine accounted for 27% of CSG’s sales last year, and replenishment of European stockpiles also lifted orders. CSG then added scale through acquisitions—majority control of Italy’s Fiocchi in 2022, purchase of U.S. Kinetic Group in 2024, and a recent deal for 49% of Austria’s Hirtenberger Defence Systems—while in December it also signed a seven-year, up to €58bn Slovak contract to supply ammunition to EU members under a rearmament program.
Strnad says he wants CSG to become Europe’s biggest arms-maker, with about three-quarters of sales already in Europe and expansion plans focused next on the United States. Its advantages include lower Czech and Slovak labour costs and vertical integration, shown by a January joint venture with Hellenic Defence Systems to produce TNT, but risks remain if the war ends or fast-growing entrants such as Germany’s Helsing capture budget share; at home, CSG is also building profile by becoming the Czech Olympic team’s main sponsor and buying Viktoria Plzen, a rival of AC Sparta Prague.
