August 2026 will be an excellent month for astronomical observations. The Perseid meteor shower will peak between August 12 and 13, offering prime viewing conditions thanks to an exceptionally dark sky during the new moon. Additionally, a rare alignment of six planets will occur in the early morning of August 12.

The most highly anticipated astronomical event of the month is the total solar eclipse occurring at sunset on August 12. The path of totality will cross parts of Spain, Portugal, Iceland, and Greenland, where the sun's low position will create a unique and highly photogenic spectacle.

The month's astronomical feast will conclude with a partial lunar eclipse on August 27. This eclipse will cover up to 96 percent of the moon's disk and will be widely visible across the Americas. It can be easily observed without any special eye protection by simply finding a dark spot away from light pollution.
