The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced the start of a new El Niño that is projected to raise sea-surface temperatures by more than 2.5°C and possibly up to 3°C. This would be the highest rise in 75 years of record-keeping, exceeding the previous record of 2.5°C set during the 1982-83 event.
El Niño events compound global warming trends, as seen when the 2024 El Niño pushed global temperatures to a record 1.55°C above pre-industrial levels. Climate modellers warn that the upcoming cycle could make 2027 even hotter than 2024.
Agricultural impacts are expected to be severe, following the 2023-24 El Niño which peaked at 1.5°C above normal and caused southern Africa's worst drought in over 100 years. The Food and Agriculture Organisation warns that regions such as the Sahel and Somalia are at risk of severe crop failures and flooding.
