One year into his term, South Korea's President Lee Jae Myung maintains a strong 60% approval rating, bolstered by political stability and a stock market where the KOSPI index nearly tripled to over 8,000. In local elections on June 3rd, his Democratic Party won 12 out of 16 major mayoral and gubernatorial posts.
To manage relations with Donald Trump, South Korea pledged a $350 billion investment package and agreed to increase its defence spending from 2.7% of GDP last year to 3.5%. The agreement also grants South Korea the rights to enrich nuclear fuel and possess nuclear-powered submarines, moving it closer to potential nuclear capability.
Despite his success, President Lee faces major challenges, including implementing complex deals with the United States and addressing economic inequality stemming from the artificial intelligence chip boom. Furthermore, he must navigate personal legal battles that have been put on hold, in a country where over half of the presidents since the late 1980s have been jailed or impeached.
