America said the operation exceeded the scale of the 2003 Iraq “shock and awe” campaign, while a US submarine sank an Iranian warship near Sri Lanka, leaving more than 80 bodies recovered, dozens of sailors rescued, and marking America’s first known combat torpedo firing since the second world war.
Iran retaliated with drones and missiles against Israel and targets across the region; although most were intercepted, strikes still reached America’s embassy in Riyadh, a port in Oman, luxury hotels in Dubai, and a US base in Qatar. The conflict spread quickly: Hizbullah rocket fire triggered Israeli strikes in Beirut and a cross-border incursion into Lebanon; Gulf flights were cancelled, thousands of expatriate workers were evacuated, and protests in Pakistan killed dozens, including at least 10 people during an assault on the American consulate in Karachi.
The economic shock was concentrated in energy and markets: Brent crude rose from $70 recently to nearly $84 a barrel, an increase of about 20%, while Qatar shut the terminal that handles one-fifth of global LNG supplies, pushing European gas futures up by more than 50%. Asian markets were hit hardest, with South Korea’s main share index plunging 12% in its worst single-day fall on record before rebounding; meanwhile, France said it would launch a new nuclear-armed submarine in 2036 and warned that the next 50 years would be a nuclear era.
