Despite a strong overall US jobs report, employment in the information sector, including software publishers, social networks, and web search portals, shrank in May for the 16th time in the last 17 months. This decline aligns with recent layoffs by Big Tech giants like Meta and Microsoft, who are looking to reduce labor costs to offset heavy spending on AI. According to Challenger, Gray & Christmas, tech-sector layoff announcements in May climbed to the highest level in almost two years.

Since its post-pandemic peak in November 2022—the same month ChatGPT debuted—the information sector has shed 332,000 jobs, representing nearly 11% of its workforce. Although this dominant sector leads in profit expansion, it is one of the worst places in the economy to find work. Conversely, nonresidential construction jobs rose for a seventh straight month in May, and construction spending on data centers eclipsed $50 billion in April for the first time, exceeding all US government public transportation infrastructure construction spending. However, this construction boom has only offset about a quarter of the job losses in information employment since ChatGPT's introduction.

Another major employer facing a similar AI impact is the financial activities sector, which shed 22,000 jobs in May, bringing total losses to over 80,000 so far this year. Although bank leaders, including HSBC CEO Georges Elhedery, suggest that humans will remain central to banking, the overall outlook remains far from rosy as major financial institutions signal future changes.
