Is China covering up a violent attack at a Beijing market? image

On March 29, local reports described a calm day in the capital, while videos on X (a blocked platform) showed a market in Fangshan, southwest Beijing, in apparent disorder after a man rammed a construction vehicle through stalls, with one image showing a body lying on the ground. These videos were unverified, yet they sharply contradicted the official narrative.

The next day, reporters found the site ringed by dozens of police officers and local volunteers in Communist Party-style red armbands, with a China SWAT vehicle nearby. A police officer said that if an attack had occurred mental illness was likely and the attacker was probably in custody, and then prevented questions to local residents from being asked.

Authorities continued to refuse acknowledgement, while online comments suggest public awareness: one WeChat user asked whether “something bigger happened today,” and another said they found nothing on the internet, then posted a construction-vehicle photo. The broader pattern was highlighted by two numbers: in China at least eight knife- or car-based attacks on parents and children near schools were reported over the past two years (about four per year), and another violent incident on March 28 in Britain injured seven pedestrians.
