Tesla said on Wednesday it would stop producing Model S and Model X at its California plant and convert space at Fremont, California, to produce Optimus humanoid robots, but later in the same text it also says it will stop making Model S and Model Y next quarter, creating an internal model-reference inconsistency. On the earnings call, Elon Musk framed the move as part of a shift toward autonomy and robotics, set a target of 1,000,000 Optimus robots per year at Fremont, and warned that China would be the toughest competitor. Tesla shares rose about 2% in extended trading.
For full-year 2025, Tesla revenue fell 3% to $94.8 billion, its first annual revenue decline in five years, while net income fell 26% year over year to $5.9 billion, indicating margin pressure as it increases AI and robotics investment. Tesla delivered 1.6 million vehicles in 2025, down 9% versus 2024, and ceded the EV leadership position to BYD amid intensifying competition and the expiration of U.S. tax credits. BYD’s battery-electric deliveries rose nearly 28% to about 2.3 million units in 2025, a volume gap of roughly 0.7 million vehicles.
On autonomy and new ventures, Tesla said it launched supervised Full Self Driving (FSD) in South Korea and customers there drove over 1,000,000 km using the software in a single month after launch, but it still lacks approval to roll out the feature in China. Although Tesla does not break out regional sales, China Passenger Car Association data says Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory delivered 851,732 vehicles in 2025 including domestic sales and exports, down 7.1% versus 2024. China sales were 625,698 vehicles in 2025, down 4.8%, with both domestic sales and exports slowing.
