The latest report published by the OECD indicates that in an era of digital transformation and rapid artificial intelligence development, foundational literacy and numeracy skills are critical for accessing opportunities. However, the UK is facing a severe numeracy crisis, with approximately half of working-age adults possessing the math skills of an 11-year-old. Think-tank research warns that if the UK fails to effectively improve public numeracy skills, the growing dominance of AI will further exacerbate existing social inequalities.
As the AI economy arrives, future societal demands on humans will focus less on simple calculation and more on supervision and judgment, such as understanding probability, orders of magnitude, and proportions. Although most of the public highly trusts the accuracy of AI, people often lack the necessary skills to verify the results generated by these systems. Unfortunately, while the need for numeracy is rising, adult participation in math learning has dropped significantly, which not only affects the quality of the workforce for businesses but also severely undermines personal financial management capabilities.
To address this challenge and fulfill its AI ambitions, the UK must treat mathematics education as a public utility and consider initiatives like a National Year of Numeracy to upskill the population.
