Pope Leo XIV called for artificial intelligence to be “disarmed” in a landmark encyclical, arguing that AI must become more “human-friendly,” be freed from monopolistic control, and not be used for geopolitical or commercial gain. The document, Magnifica humanitas, is his most consequential act since becoming leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics a year ago, and it places him in tension with Donald Trump’s preference for lighter regulation.

The 70-year-old pope warned that no algorithm can make war morally acceptable. He said AI can accelerate conflict and make it more impersonal, while also being used to pick military targets or worsen risks to banking systems. His remarks extend the Church’s concern that technology should not dictate what matters or reduce human beings to cogs in a system.

The report links this debate to Anthropic PBC’s Mythos tool, which has heightened global anxiety over unregulated AI, and to the Vatican’s invitation to co-founder Christopher Olah. Olah urged religious communities, scholars, governments, and civil society to push events in a better direction. The episode also highlights broader political friction involving JD Vance, Peter Thiel, Father Paolo Benanti, and Leo’s earlier disputes with Trump over Iran.
