ING chief China economist Lynn Song highlighted that this growth was fueled by tech sectors, with semiconductor exports surging by 110%, automatic data processing equipment rising by 66%, and mobile phone shipments increasing by 44%.
Geographically, trade with key partners showed substantial shifts. Driven by a trade truce, exports to the United States rose by 35% in May, while imports from the US grew by 20%. China's monthly trade surplus escalated to $105.4 billion, up from $84.8 billion in April. Trade with the European Union saw exports rise 7.6% and imports drop 1.3% in May. Meanwhile, exports to Russia for January-May grew by 26.4%, and exports to Southeast Asian countries climbed 24.3%, reflecting a diversification of trade routes to bypass tariffs.
To sustain its domestic AI development, China significantly increased imports of computing hardware. In May, inbound shipments of integrated circuits grew by 68% to $56.6 billion, and automatic data processing imports jumped 80% to $17 billion, together constituting 27.1% of total imports. Imports from South Korea hit a record high, skyrocketing 84% year-on-year to $26.7 billion, making South Korea China's largest source of imports at 9.8%, ahead of Taiwan at 8.5%, the European Union at 8.3%, and the United States at 4.8%.
