Gen Z is turning once-stereotyped “senior” pastimes into mainstream hobbies, from knitting and crocheting to growing flowers, fishing, baking, bingo, and birdwatching. In Britain, attendance in flower-arranging classes almost quadrupled between 2023 and 2025, while the United States saw two-and-a-half times more puzzle competitions, and birdwatching participation reached more than 450,000 Gen Z participants in Britain up from about 60,000 in 2018.

The “Grannycore” trend extends beyond leisure into taste in fashion and home goods, including florals and cardigans, while Gen Z and millennials are just as enthusiastic as retirees about cruising according to industry data. This reflects a nostalgia-driven shift on platforms like TikTok, where youths reject the idea that cruises are only for older people and treat the activity as convenient travel.

Psychologists call this pattern “anemoia,” a desire to experience what was missed before, and Eventbrite-led trends suggest younger people are seeking slower, less screen-heavy spaces. In London Creative Gals, around 90% of attendees arrive alone to meet like-minded peers, the group often choosing soft-drink social evenings like pottery painting, a shift tied to improved concentration, grounding conversations, and perceived well-being benefits.
