Many employers in the host cities of the 2026 World Cup are encouraging staff to work remotely on match days to avoid anticipated traffic congestion and delays. Companies like S&P Global and Goldman Sachs have temporarily eased their attendance policies, and even JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, a vocal critic of remote work, is offering some flexibility to employees.

To mitigate traffic issues, cities such as New York, Seattle, and Los Angeles are taking measures like closing roads and encouraging carpooling. Mexico City has gone as far as mandating remote work for federal employees and suspending school classes to deal with the traffic challenges posed by fan events and protests.

While this flexible arrangement provides convenience for many office workers, front-line employees in hospitality, healthcare, and manufacturing still have no choice but to commute. Surprisingly, because so many office workers stayed home, roads in some areas were unexpectedly clearer than usual on match days.
