Three simultaneous cyclones combined with an unusually intense monsoon have swept from the South China Sea to the Bay of Bengal, causing at least 1,600 deaths and leaving hundreds missing. Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand are all struggling with the aftermath.

Continued flooding has affected nearly 11 million people and displaced over 1 million. Sri Lanka, still recovering from its 2022 economic collapse, has suffered severe damage to infrastructure and agriculture, while Indonesia has also been heavily hit.

Indonesia accounts for nearly half of the death toll, implying around 800 fatalities and highlighting its acute vulnerability. The World Meteorological Organization notes that such powerful cyclones are rare so close to the equator, and limited local experience with extreme weather has amplified the disaster’s overall impact.
