Despite the official start of the hurricane season, tropical cyclone activity in the Atlantic basin has been unusually quiet this year. This is primarily due to a strong El Niño event in the Pacific, which has pushed sea surface temperatures to historic highs.
These abnormally warm waters alter global upper-level wind patterns, creating strong wind shear over the Atlantic. At the same time, dry and dusty air blowing from the Sahara Desert in Africa further suppresses the development of thunderstorms.
Although unfavorable climatic conditions have led to a season with well below average activity, experts warn coastal residents to remain vigilant. History shows that highly destructive and intense hurricanes can still occur during El Niño years.
