A woman in Beijing surnamed Zhao lost over $100,000 in May to a romance scammer posing as a Microsoft researcher. After connecting on a social media platform, the scammer persuaded her to move their conversations to Microsoft Teams, providing her with login credentials. Trusting the reputable brand, she was lured into a cryptocurrency investment scheme, only for the scammer to disappear with her money and revoke her account access, destroying all chat logs.
Zhao's experience is not isolated, as dozens of other victims across China have reported falling prey to the exact same scheme, losing anywhere from a few thousand to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Scammers increasingly exploit enterprise communication tools like Teams, Webex, and Cliq, posing as recruiters, landlords, or potential dates. These apps are not blocked in China and offer advanced features like screen sharing, while allowing scammers to control the organization accounts and effortlessly erase evidence afterward.
Compared to domestic Chinese apps like WeChat that actively detect sensitive keywords and issue warnings to users, Western enterprise software platforms appear less prepared to combat these investment frauds. Following a surge of user complaints and police warnings, Microsoft began displaying scam warnings on Teams in China in June and discontinued its personal version. Similarly, other platforms like Zoho Cliq have disabled online payments and suspended free versions in China to curb the rampant fraudulent activity.
