The US government has lifted foreign access restrictions on Anthropic's Fable 5 AI model, clearing it for broader release. Previously, the Commerce Department had imposed export controls requiring the company to obtain US permission before allowing foreign nationals to access the model.

The easing of the restrictions came after Anthropic pledged to proactively address security risks and agreed to work with the government on establishing protocols and standards for future models. The company stated it would restore user access to both Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models starting the day after receiving the notice.

Although now reversed, the temporary export control directive marked the most significant intervention by the US government into an AI venture's operations to date. This action also reverberated across the AI industry, influencing rival startup OpenAI to limit the release of its new GPT-5.6 model under government pressure.
