Recently, a proposal for the US government to take ownership stakes in large artificial intelligence companies has emerged, gaining bipartisan support and attention. However, this idea of handing over partial ownership to the government has raised many concerns, especially since it is not a necessary measure to ensure that the public benefits from AI development.
In reality, the advancement of AI is already benefiting the public by enhancing productivity across various industries and driving economic growth, and the government should focus on improving the tax system to increase public investment rather than directly intervening in the market. Government ownership would not only disrupt market competition mechanisms but also potentially lead to political cronyism, stifle innovation, and allow massive corporations to monopolize the market and suppress startups.
More severely, because AI platforms also serve as mediums for information and speech dissemination, government intervention carries extremely high risks. This could not only trigger issues of censorship and surveillance but also allow political forces to interfere with information output, thereby posing a grave threat to the nation's freedom and democracy.
