Rothera, a prediction market backed by Robinhood Markets Inc. and Susquehanna International Group, has driven more than $3 billion in wagers since its launch in May. Fueled by World Cup fever, the platform's average daily volume in July surged 86% compared to June, reaching $118 million and showing rapid growth.
Rothera offers yes-or-no contracts on professional baseball, economic events, and the World Cup. Currently accessible only via Robinhood, the startup is in active discussions with several other retail and institutional brokers to expand its reach, successfully overcoming the typical liquidity chicken-and-egg problem thanks to its prominent backers.
A Barclays analyst noted that Rothera's relationship with Robinhood allows its transaction fees to be significantly lower than those of competing platforms. Robinhood recently capped these fees at 1 cent per contract, down from a previous high of 2 cents, strengthening Rothera's position against major rivals like Polymarket and Kalshi.
